Competition Time

Enfield Council is now looking for an original piece of work based on research and presented in the form of an essay on any aspect of Enfield’s past, which includes the areas of Edmonton, Enfield, and Southgate.

The prize of £250 will be awarded by the David Pam Memorial Bursary Committee for an outstanding piece of work demonstrating the quality of the research, accuracy of the descriptions and materials; creative presentation and details that show the links between the past and present.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Service, Protection and Libraries, said: “Enfield is a fascinating borough today – but much of this comes from its past. So what can be discovered about it and the way it has developed?

“Its industries, early settlers, the influence of the River Lea and its relationship with the rest of London are among the many subjects to explore and discover.

“David Pam was a remarkable local historian always ready to take a fresh look at the borough and shed new light on its development. He was passionate about Enfield’s history and described in great detail a past rich in productivity and creativity; alive with invention and gloriously blessed with wonderful green space.”

Applications will be accepted 30 December allowing a full three months before the closing date at 5pm on 31 March 2016.

Eligibility/Criteria

• Open to any individual located within the London Borough of Enfield
• The essay should be approximately 2,500 words in length. Essays that are shorter than 2000 words and longer than 3000 words will not be considered
• The work must be an original piece of historical research into Enfield’s history
• There will be a limit of one entry per contributor
• All work submitted for this competition is expected to be the result of the entrant’s own research and thought, expressed in his/her own words
• The work may include illustrations, photographs, data, tables of statistics etc, relevant to the subject.
• Evidence of some interaction with Enfield Local Studies / use of research materials
• The winning entries will be decided by the David Pam Memorial Bursary Committee, whose decision will be final.
• All contributions should be submitted to Enfield Local Studies Library & Archive. We cannot return submitted work, so please ensure that you keep a copy of your completed work
• Work must have been carried out in the last year
• Contain no previously published research work
• Hardcopy entries should be typed in 12 point and double spaced
• The entry is to be accompanied by a completed entry form. No entry will be accepted unless it is clearly marked with the name of the entrant. No late entries will be accepted.
