Crossrail 2 and its possible affects on New Southgate, Southgate and Palmers Green

London is a fast growing city, projected to grow by two million people by the early 2030s. Transport for London and Network Rail are investing heavily in London’s transport infrastructure to accommodate this growth.

What is Crossrail 2? – A New high frequency, high-capacity rail line running through London and into Surrey & Hertfordshire.

Why Crossrail 2? – Crossrail 2 would help to relieve congestion and overcrowding on busy mainline routes into central London and on the Underground network, while allowing communities around London to benefit from the creation of new jobs and new homes. Trains and platforms would be less crowded and journeys into the capital would be faster, enabling London to continue growing and drive the UK economy forward.

How will it affect us is New Southgate and Palmers Green - Crossrail 2 will not only reduce crowding on Underground lines and National Rail, but it will boost economic growth and regeneration in the area. Following recent consultations it looks like Crossrail 2 will be extended to New Southgate, this will have a knock-on affect on properties prices in the area with reduced train times into London and increased property demand.

In 2013 Transport For London ran a consultation on the Crossrail 2 project. There was strong support for the project overall, and since then they have been working on potential route alignments, station locations and branch options.

Full details, including the consultation report of the 2013 consultation, can be found on Transport for London’s consultation website.

The latest consultation carried out between 9 June and 25 July 2014 was focused on three areas of the route:

·         The location of a station in Chelsea

·         An extension from Alexandra Palace to New Southgate

·         The route alignment in Dalston and Hackney

The expected opening date for the new link has been brought forward to 2029
