DIY – When is it time to call in an expert?

As featured in our September issue of Palmers Green and Southgate LIFE magazine

Anthony Webb Estate Agents have managed rental properties for local Palmers Green landlords for over 15 years and know how difficult it can be to find a good reliable tradesman.

Did you know you could seriously affect the value of your property?:

Visible wiring, poor DIY and poor plumbing could put potential buyers off purchasing your home. Dodgy DIY by British homeowners may decrease the sale price of the average UK home by over £30,800 research suggests. Lloyd’s Bank even estimate that some 3.3 million botched DIY tasks need to be put right by a paid professional, at an average cost of over three grand each time.

Safety First

DIY doesn’t just have a large impact on the value of your home, it is also potentially dangerous. Using the correct tradesman for any work carried out on your home ensures it will be safe, installed correctly and meets the legally required standards particularly important for landlords.

It gets worse:

Experts say an estimated one in five DIYers will suffer an injury at some point. Others can invest long hours only to realise they’re in way over their head.

Our resident Anthony Webb handy man Mick Lawton can undertake a large variety of work in the home and explains the importance of getting the job right first time.

“DIY these days seems to be on the decline as men/women are more reluctant to attempt jobs in the home. While DIY projects can be immensely rewarding, homeowners should be wary of attempting anything beyond their skill-set. As research shows, inadequate work can seriously reduce the value of your home. I have visited many homes where jobs have been started, botched and then left incomplete for months on end. Whilst it can be tempting to try your hand at DIY if you are unsure of the quality your work it’s best to call in a tradesman for some advice.”

Mick is based in Palmers Green, he specialises in decorating, plumbing, kitchen and bathroom fitting, tiling, plastering and carpentry services.
